Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal Therapy)

Root canal treatment has given dentists a safe way of saving those teeth which are severely damaged or infected, previously requiring extraction.

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal procedure is used to save the damaged or dead pulp in the root canal of the tooth by cleaning out the diseased pulp and reshaping the canal. The site is then sterilised and sealed with a white filling to prevent further infection and give your smile a strong, functional and aesthetically pleasing restoration. The soft tissue around the tooth contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue which is used in the tooths developmental and growth stage and is why infection here is notoriously painful.

What causes pulp nerve damage?

There are two common causes of pulp nerve damage. The first is physical irritation which is generally brought on by aggressive tooth decay reaching down to the nerve. The second cause is deep fillings which allow harmful bacteria to reach the nerve resulting in infection and decay.

What are the symptoms of pulp nerve damage?

There are several common symptoms of pulp nerve damage. Each individual may experience the symptoms differently. These symptoms may include:

  •  Pain while chewing
  •  Pain in the tooth when biting down
  •  Hypersensitivity of the teeth with hot or cold drinks
  •  Facial swelling
